Emergency calls we often attend in Chester include pipe joints covered in green or white crust that have started to weep, combi boilers that send a burst of cold water in the middle of a hot shower, and households unsure which valve shuts off what when a leak starts. FAQs

Emergency Plumber FAQs for Chester

Which areas in and around Chester do you cover?

We cover all of Chester and nearby areas, including the city centre, Hoole, Newton, Upton, Upton Heath, Blacon, Boughton, Great Boughton, Vicars Cross, Christleton, Huntington, Handbridge, Queens Park, Curzon Park, Westminster Park, Lache, Hough Green, Saltney, Mickle Trafford and Guilden Sutton.

There’s a green or white crust on one of my pipe joints. Is it leaking?

Very likely, yes. Green deposits on copper and white crusty build-up usually form where a joint has been weeping slowly and the water has evaporated. It may only be a tiny drip now, but the joint can corrode further and fail. We can remake or replace the joint before it turns into a bigger leak.

My hot water goes cold for a few seconds in the middle of a shower. Why?

On combi boilers, a short burst of cold can happen if the hot tap is turned off and on again quickly, as cold water passes through before the boiler relights. If it happens without the tap being touched, the cause may be low water flow, a faulty flow sensor or the boiler cutting out. We can check the boiler and supply to find out which.

What’s the difference between a stop tap and an isolation valve?

The stop tap shuts off the water supply to the whole property and is usually under the kitchen sink or where the supply pipe comes in. Isolation valves are small valves on the pipes to individual fittings, such as a toilet, tap or washing machine, and are turned with a flat screwdriver. Using an isolation valve lets you stop a leak at one fitting while keeping water on elsewhere.

Will the price be agreed before you start?

Yes. Your plumber will diagnose the problem and give you a clear quote first. Work only starts once you’ve agreed to the price.
