How to fix problems with interior doors
Doors are so important to your home and can have a huge impact on how the room looks, and it’s also important to keep safety in mind. But doors can develop a whole host of faults, any of which can prevent them from opening and closing smoothly. These can be caused by heavy wear, age, previous moisture, or a buildup of paint layers over the years.
How to repair a fallen door
A door can fall down because its hinges have loosened. First, check all the hinge screws to make sure they are still tight. If a screw can’t be tightened properly, you may need to replace it with a larger one or plug the existing hole with matches.
Step 1
Begin by removing the screw. Coat one end of a few matches with wood glue and tap two or three of them into the hole in the screw.
Step 2
When the glue has cured, cut the matchsticks so that they are level with the hinge flap. Use a chisel and a mallet to do this. After that, simply put the screw back in place.
How to repair a sticking door
Sometimes the door may stick at the top, bottom or side because paint has accumulated on the edge of the door and frame. You may be able to sand high spots with coarse sandpaper and a sanding block. However, if it is sticking badly, you will need to plane off the excess material.
Step 1
You can tell where the door is sticking by the marks on the paint. In this case, on the edge of the door. If a door sticks to the top or side edge, you may be able to plane it off without taking it off its hinges. However, if it sticks near the bottom, you will need to remove the door and place it on a workbench for planing.
Step 2
Plane the edge, leaving enough slack to repaint it. If you need to plane near the lock, remove the lock first.
Step 3
Sand the planed edge of the door and the top and bottom corners with a sanding block. Then prime the wood before repainting it.
