Flooded toilet? Here are some essential steps to recovery

Clogged toilets can happen in the best-kept homes. Busy families can forget to have someone fill the bathtub. From a broken pipe to a sewage backup, it doesn’t take much to flood the bathroom.

TURN OFF THE WATER

Place the sink or toilet valve so you can shut off the water supply and stop the flooding. The oval knobs are usually located under the sink and behind the toilet.

FIX THE PROBLEM

Determine the exact source of the flooding and remove the blockage or fix the leak. We recommend calling a professional plumber for most repairs.

DOCUMENT THE DAMAGE

Even minor bathroom flooding can result in serious water damage. Save it as documentation in case you need to file an insurance claim.

CLEAN OUT THE CABINETS

Get everything out of the vanity cabinets and any other shelves that come in contact with the wet floor. Inspect these areas for damage and determine what type of cleaning they need.

REMOVE STANDING WATER

Tackle minor flooding on the floor with old towels and wipe up well at the end. Lay newspapers flat in cabinets to absorb excess moisture in hard-to-reach areas. If the flooding is severe, consider hiring a water removal service to take care of the damage.

USE A WET VACUUM

If you’re dealing with several inches of flooding or a carpeted bathroom floor, vacuum up the water with a wet vacuum. Be sure to follow the appliance’s instruction manual to ensure safe use.

START THE DRYING PROCESS

Place as many fans as possible and arrange them so that their air circulation creates cross currents.

REMOVE DAMAGED SHEETROCK

Soaked sheetrock is a perfect breeding ground for mold, so don’t try to save it. Tear off any wallboard that doesn’t dry within three days, replace it.
